Los Angeles City To Close U.S. Route 101 This Weekend In Downtown L.A. To Demilish Section Of Sixth Street Viaduct

Published on : Wednesday, February 3, 2016

LaxTravelers coming to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) from areas east of downtown Los Angeles are advised that the City of Los Angeles’ Bureau of Engineering will close U.S. Route 101 through downtown Los Angeles for 40 hours this weekend beginning 10 p.m. on Friday, February 5 through 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 7. The closure will allow a section of the Sixth Street Viaduct to be demolished. City officials are encouraging drivers to PLAN AHEAD, EXPECT DELAYS and to FOLLOW DETOUR SIGNS to alternative routes.

The 2.5-mile section of U.S. Route 101 will be closed from the Interstate 10/Interstate 101 split to the Interstate 5/Interstate 10/Interstate 101 interchange just east of downtown Los Angeles. Additionally, motorists travelling west on Route 60 from the Pomona area will not be able to access U.S. Route 101.

The 84-year-old Sixth Street Viaduct suffers from a chemical deterioration of the bridge’s concrete and needs to be replaced. Demolition of the entire viaduct is expected to take nine months. Construction of the new viaduct is scheduled to be completed late-2019.

Detour signs have been installed to assist motorists in finding alternative routes around the construction closure and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) are posting directional signs on area freeways.
