Macau lists second after Hong Kong in Chinese tourists’ expenditure

MacauMacau named as the second most popular destination for the tourists from China, as the city attracts more than 122 million mainland Chinese tourists with a tourist expenditure of US$109.8 billion.




The main destination for mainland Chinese tourists was Hong Kong, and seven of the eight remaining top 10 destinations located in Asia – Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia – and in eighth place the only non-Asian country, the United States of America.




Macau was most visited in 2016 by more than 20.4 million tourists from mainland China, or 66% out of a total of 30.9 million.




The Chinese Academy of Tourism report also showed that the majority of Chinese tourists had a medium to medium-high income, with those who spent between 5,000 and 20,000 yuan (US$760 to US$3,040 dollars) accounting for three-quarters of the total.




The Chinese Academy of Tourism also  quoted that the number of tourists seeking the countries and regions involved in the “Belt and Road” initiative has grown significantly, to at least 50 million in 2016.
