Recently, the municipal government of Maebashi, the capital of Gunma Prefecture, has opted for Instagram online services for sharing images, to endorse the attractions of the city to young crowd, foreign nationals and others.
In July 2016, an account on visitor information was published. At present, it has more than 4,000 followers, with half of them comprising international visitors.
Side by side, the city has also introduced an account which posts farming and forestry pictures expecting to attract young visitors and others to these industries.
More and more, growing number of municipal governments in different countries are utilizing Facebook, Twitter and various social media platforms in order to distribute information across all channels. However, there are few official Instagram accounts in Gunma Prefecture.
A city official had actually expressed this concept. He loves photography and introduced the account in 2016.
So far, over 900 posts in terms to tourism have been uploaded. These include photographs of cherry blossoms; wakasagi smelt fishing at Onuma lake by Mt. Akagi, and other seasonal scenes and events.
Majority of the snaps were captured by a city tourism department employee using a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. The striking photos attract attention of the visitors easily.
With more than 4,030 followers as of June 17, the account had much more followers than 950 of an account run by the Tokyo metropolitan government’s publicity department and the about 320 followers of an account run by the city of Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture.
