Indian carriers are stringently taking steps towards building a green tomorrow and the airline industry have also been exempted from the plastic ban.
As per a report by the International Air Transport Association in 2016 flyers generated 5.2 million ton of waste which is equivalent to the amount of waste Mumbai generates in a span of two years.
The numbers could massively go up if the numbers are not controlled and would generate 10 million tonnes of waste by 2030.
Vistara, Jet Airways, GoAir are some of the airlines who has switched to cco-friendly alternatives like biodegradable cutlery.
A Vistara spokesperson stated that the usage of plastic onboard is ‘minimal’ and this month the airline pledged to further halve the plastic use.
Plastic casseroles have been replaced with aluminum dishes, plastic straws with paper or wooden ones, disposable bowls in economy class with reusable use.
Jet Airways is using paper cups, biodegradable bags and insulated boxes for hot and cold items.
GoAir has also pledged to remain committed to plastic ban and a GoAir spokesman mentioned that they were now serving food and beverages that doesn’t use plastic cutlery. All banned plastic items have been removed from our aircraft and are working extensively to expand the initiative across the country.
The report also mentioned that the Air India will also be switching soon to plastic cups with bone china cups on all economy class domestic flights apart from the one operated by the ATR aircraft.
