This is the second consecutive year Malaysia has won the title of ‘Asia’s Leading Destination’ at the prestigious event held at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam the past weekend. The event attracted industry leaders to recognise the best in Asian and Australasian travel.
The government agency Tourism Malaysia was also recognised as Asia’s Leading Tourist Board at the same event.
The award winners were determined based on votes by senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents as well as the general public.
Malaysia will now be competing against other winners worldwide in the Grand Final, which will be held in Morocco later this year in December.
Tourist arrivals to Malaysia for January to June 2016 increased by 3.7% compared to the same period in 2015, according to Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board.
Malaysia received 13 million (13,032,775) tourists in the first half of this year compared to 12.5 million (12,567,300) tourists in 2015. Correspondingly, tourist receipts rose by 10.7%, contributing RM37.4 billion to the country’s revenue against RM33.8 billion in 2015, which translates to an average per capita expenditure of RM2.869.6.
