The plane was carrying 309 passengers. All passengers and crew are reported safe after being evacuated.
Reports suggest that the flight risked a disaster while flying over the Indian Ocean, following which Indian navy and Coast Guard officials were to stay on standby.
After the pilot sent emergency SOS message to Air Traffic Controllers, the Coast Guard rushed their ships out on stand-by, if plane fails to reach the Mumbai airport.
The passengers were evacuated with full emergency procedure out of the main cabin.
The situation inside the plane was dire as crew and pilots had weighed options including a soft landing over the Indian Ocean. But averting major tragedy the plane was able to reach Mumbai airport at around 2:58 pm (IST).
Ambulances, firefighters and airfield safety vehicles were kept on standby near the runway for emergency cases.
The plane has been towed at the parking area and a high level inspection is being carried out at the airport.
