15 hotels were yesterday declared to be eco-certified under the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the first time hotels in Malta and Gozo have been so certified, Tourism Minister Karmenu Vella said, auguring that other hotels, especially those in the lower classes, would join the scheme.
More importance should be given to certain factors as the tourism industry grew. These include the environment, culture, the historical heritage and natural resources, Mr Vella said.
Sustainable tourism should be considered in the light of tourism product improvement, he added, a point shared by Mauro Marocu, excutive head of the council.
Malta so far has 10 five star hotels, 10 four star and three three star hotels which are eco-certified.
