In WTM London this year, Minister of Tourism Malta, Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis was chosen among main panelists during the tenth edition of the UNWTO Ministers’ Summit, which was moderated by CNN Correspondent Becky Anderson. The theme for the discussion was: Tourism and Security: promoting safe and seamless travel. Dr. Zammit said that safety and security in tourism is of utmost importance everywhere. Since tourism means enjoyment, hence, security and peace of mind is a must. Any risk or threat to tourism needs to be assesses, managed and discussed with competence, power and expertise.
The Minister also stressed the importance of international bodies such as the UNWTO, WHO and others as integral for the successful management of any emergency situation and crisis. He said that any destination can face negative situation, and so, every destination should be prepared to tackle such situations. The UNWTO has praised the growth of tourism in Malta as robust and positive.
Tourist arrivals in Malta rose to 9.7%, between the periods of January to June. Dr. Zammit along with senior Malta tourism officials attended a number of meetings with current and upcoming tour operators and travel agencies interested in Malta tourism markets. They also had meetings with airline operators and discussed the prospects of opening new air routes. The minister received positive feedback on the UK source market from major tour operators for 2017.
