A Shanghai Police said in the press statement that a man took out a homemade explosive device in a beer bottle from a bag he was carrying and threw it in front of the check-in counters. The beer bottle exploded and the man took out a dagger from his bag lashed his own neck and collapsed on the floor.
The four passengers at the scene, one of whom was a Filipino national got slightly injured by broken glass from the blast.
The assailant is currently in critical condition and being treated in hospital. The injured passengers have also been hospitalized for treatment.
The police took control of the incident area and the case is under further investigation. Other flight operations at Pudong are not affected and armed troops inside Pudong airport sealed off part of the arrivals terminal.
The motivation behind the attack was not clear.
Pudong is one of China’s busiest aviation hubs, with more than 60 million passengers passing through its two terminals last year.
