This week, Mr. Bob East, the Mantra chief executive will be declared as the new chairman of Tourism Australia, with Steve Ciobo, the federal Trade, Tourism and Investment Minister trying to fill the vacant position with a fellow Gold Coaster.
Mr East will be replacing Tony South, a CA. Mr. East leads the biggest hotel chain of the country. Tony South had resigned from position in July following Geoff Dixon, former Qantas chief executive, who left the position in the year 2015.
Since 2015, some of the leading names in political and business community of Australia have shown interest in the role like the former Carnival head Ann Sherry and leading businessman Tony Shepherd, a former Business Council of Australia chairman.
Earlier chairmen have included the former Coles chairman Rick Allert and former deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer.
Diane Smith-Gander, businesswoman was equally keen on the position two years back. However, her appointment disillusioned Liberal stalwarts Joe Hockey and Scott Morrison because of her then position as chairwoman of Transfield Services. It provided facilities management to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s offshore processing centres in Nauru and Manus Island.
Point to be noted, Anna Guillan, an experienced Hayman Island marketer is anticipated to be declared as the deputy chairman of Tourism Australia this week.
