Many flights between Sydney and NSW have been cancelled by Virgin Australia and Qantas Airways today due to smoke and dangerous weather conditions.
Strong winds and visibility issues have also caused contributed to the flight cancellations. Qantas tweeted today asking passengers to check their flight status as the weather was impacting flights.
Regional Express has also suspended all services to Grafton because of reduced visibility caused by bushfire smoke. Other ports on the NSW North and South Coasts may also be on the radar as fires are supposed to develop over the coming days.
Virgin Australia has assured passengers that it will waive any change or cancellation fees. As per the airlines, it is assisting the Salvation Army Emergency Services by flying their team members to locations most in need of help.
Port Macquarie Airport has also warned of cancellations and delays due to expected worsening of the visibility. Coffs Harbour Airport has also been kept open but many flights have been affected this morning due to low visibility.
Many travellers at Grafton Airport and those in flights crossing Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour have shared their photos of extreme smoke haze on the social media platform.
Although there are no current disruptions to Sydney Airport, services may be disrupted due to the strong winds causing single runaway operations.
Weather experts have warned that a dangerous southerly is heading towards Sydney and other parts of northern NSW with fire bosses fearing winds of up to 90km/hour. The change is supposed to move through Wollongong, Sydney, Central Coast and Hunter around 7 pm. It is supposed to reach Mid Coast North in the few hours where many fires are burning.
The dry cool change is expected to create challenging conditions for firefighters. Forecasters have said that the abrupt shift in wind direction with this change will cause fires to start moving in a different location.
