The Dawn Karakia will take place this Saturday (June 17) beneath the Mata Kupenga pou carvings situated next to the island’s library on Ocean View Road. The pōwhiri begins at 6am.
The place is an ideal vantage point for observing both the constellation and landmarks of significance to Ngāti Pāoa, the first official host iwi of Auckland Council’s Matariki Festival.
Later in the morning there will be a performance from Waiheke High Schools kapa haka group, local fashion designer Jeanine Clarkin will present Whakatupuranga Intergenerational on the catwalk at the Artworks Gallery, Waiheke Library will tell stories to tamariki, harakeke weaving workshops are on site and Rewi Spraggon will facilitate a discussion around the recollections of Matariki stories as they relate to Ngāti Paoa.
Those who wish to attend are advised to either make plans to stay on Waiheke the night before or book a seat on a special Fullers ferry service departing from the Downtown Ferry Terminal at 5am.
