The Maqai Beach Eco Resort along with Prime Minister has participated in COP23 mission in order to resist climate change and safeguard environment. The resort won 2016ANZ Fiji Excellence Tourism – Tourism Sustainability Award this Saturday. It took place at the Sheraton Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau Island.
Situated on Qamea Island, this resort has a strong focus on eco-tourism. It has also won 2012 lonely planet sustainability award. The managing director, Shaw Mead of New Zealand firm eCoast said that the resort went through immense loss and damage due to tropical cyclone named Winston. However, dedicated staff members brought the operation back again.
Mead said that the rebuilding cost of this resort went up to $100,000. To quote him, there are many ways we can work together in order to maintain the sustainability of our environment and we would like to help other resorts as well drive Fiji toward that direction. Our environment is what people come here to see. Our natural resources and untouched geenness and environment are what are so beautifying of our tourism sector.’’
