marriott-hotelsMarriott Hotels, the largest hotel chain in the world is planning to make communal rooms in some hotels that will be shared  between six and 16 guests.

The idea, which is still in the design stage, would be rolled out in 23 Element hotels which is the chain’s eco-conscious, extended stay brand.

The idea will be to have an apartment available on each floor of the hotel, which offers three to four bedrooms around a central common area, which will include a lounge and full kitchen.

Guests will have their own rooms to sleep in, but they will share a kitchen, dining room and lounge area.

Though the launch date is still unconfirmed, the announcement further signifies the changing tastes of travellers and the influence of the sharing economy which has had an impact on the differing formats of the hotel accommodation, which is no longer just the standard bed-and-board option of the past.

However, it won’t be just families and business colleagues who will be able to reserve, random strangers will also be able to book the individual rooms.

The introduction of these communal apartments was announced at a pop-up innovation lab at the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles in January. Marriott also showcased a new food and drink programme at its Aloft hotels, where guests can order customised breakfast pots at the touch of a screen, and a portable wine cart that automatically pours a glass when activated by a guest’s key card.

The Element brand is popular with young business travellers. The brand provides rooms at a lower price point with many of the amenities found in higher-end hotels.
