A major fire struck the Fishers Hotel that is located in Pitlochry in Perthshire yesterday around 5.30 a.m., forcing the authorities to evacuate the guests immediately. The fire ripped through the entire building on the first day of the New Year.
This hotel has 138 rooms.
About 200 guests and staff members had to be evacuated into the streets outside the hotel. This hotel was packed with visitors who were enjoying the New Year holidays and attending the Hogmanay party. They were preparing for the annual Pitlochry New Year’s Day street party.
The local inhabitants said that the hotel guests were forced out into the street in their pyjamas when the temperatures were actually freezing.
Meanwhile, more than 50 firefighters battled the fire.
A video that was posted on Twitter demonstrated how the fire ripped through the roof of the hotel. The hotel is quote popular as it keeps hosting regular events that also includes the Enchanted Forest event.
Atholl Road that is the main street through Pitlochry was about to be shut down for a major part of the day yesterday on account of the blaze.
The street party of New Year’s Day was also cancelled with a view to permit firefighters investigate the fire.
Claire Pinchbeck who owns Hettie’s Tearoom close to the hotel said that the guests seemed to exit the hotel safely. The guests were transferred to the Scotland’s Hotel after the evacuation.
Aerial platforms and hose lines were utilized by the firefighters from the rear courtyard and street to douse the fire.
The guests and all the staff members were evacuated slowly.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said that the blaze was found to be ‘well alight’ in an attic space.
It was mentioned that four breathing apparatus and two main jets have also been utilized. The incident was an ongoing one, as declared by the spokesperson.
About 55 firefighters and nine fire appliances were present at the scene.
