This new system has been unveiled on Thursday and would commence from 15th August onwards. As per this plan, new air pollution alerts would be installed in 2,500 river and bus pier signs. The alerts would also be noticed in the tube stations of London, especially in advance of and during the high-pollution days.
There would be roadside signs on the busiest roads of the capital advising drivers to turn off their car engines while they are stationary with an aim to minimize emissions into the air.
The alerts would be dependent on a three-day forecast that has been offered by airTEXT. And, these alerts would be offered for Londoners with particular health requirements.
People would be advised to utilize public transport, cycle or walk depending on the gravity of the air pollution warning. Apart from that, they would also be asked to keep a tab on any kinds of strenuous activity if they feel any symptoms associated to bad air quality. Patients suffering from asthma and other vulnerable people would be asked to use reliever inhalers more frequently.
Sadiq Khan said that the people of London are entitled to be aware about the air quality that they inhale. He added that these new air pollution alerts would enable them to keep abreast of the air quality, take necessary precautions thereby helping them plan in advance to avoid the worst consequences of air pollution.
He went on to add that such alerts would become less frequent once people start implementing measures to make the city a healthier place to reside, study and work in.
People from the Mayor’s office said that these pollution alerts would ensure that a comprehensive air pollution plan is in place.
