Are you planning to visit to San Diego and hit the gorgeous beaches anytime soon? Check. Spend an entire day at the zoo or a theme park. Check. Sample craft beer. Check. Book at any local hospital for an advanced cardiac or cancer treatment?
For years, San Diego has done good business on its reputation in terms of year-round sun, attractive coastline and family-friendly attractions in and around to lure visitors, promising life-saving treatments by well-known physicians and hospitals has never been offered up before as a selling point.
An alliance of civic, tourism and business leaders, joined by four major hospitals of San Diego is introducing a medical tourism initiative. They expect that it will lure more well-heeled patients along with their families to the region than any one hospital could attract on its own.
Dubbed DestinationCare San Diego, an investment of $150,000, the maximum of which came from Malin Burnham, a longtime businessman and philanthropist, has been associated with the project from nascent stage for the last several years. The expectation is to capture an industry valued at as much as $100 billion worldwide by declaring already well-known medical providers and life sciences research of San Diego. In this process, they attract visitors who do not consider traveling here, otherwise.
The competition, although quite tough, is given the elevated profile of some of the nation’s most recognized names in health care — Rochester, Minn.’s Mayo Clinic. Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic. Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center. New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
