Meghalaya has doubled its tourists’ inflow in last decade

dest_head_img-519In last 10 years, the number of tourists’ inflow is doubled and it is increasing rapid rate, for the improved security of the state and the free publicity of the exotic and pristine destinations in the public domain. Also the declaration of Mawlynnong in East Khasi Hills District as a cleanest village in Asia makes the tourism more surging.



The tourist inflow of both domestic and international level has increased from 4.04 lakh in 2006 to 8.39 lakh till last year. In 2006, a little over 4 lakh domestic tourists visited Meghalaya while in 2016, 8.3 lakh domestic tourists visits Meghalaya.



In last 10 years, Meghalaya also gave stress on the responsible tourism, which results Mawlynnong, to declare as the cleanest village. The number of foreign tourist visits has increased from a little over four thousand to nearly 8500 footfalls till December last year.



In 2016, there was a steady increase of tourists, which is doubled. There are about 50,000 more footfalls every year. The State Department is also hoping that the tourism increase will double in the next 7–8 years.



The State Government of Meghalaya has also increased its investment under the tourism mission. The Tourism Board implemented several attractive schemes in different travel- trade media for the tourists and the tour operators, which include construction of tourist lodges, guest houses, roadside amenities and restaurants to promote tourism.



There were huge traffic jams for over 30km along the Guwahati-Shillong-Sohra Highway. This is particular witnessed during weekends when thousands of cars from neighbouring Assam flock the state.



The boom of tourists has also witnessed an increase of accommodation even in the villages. The State Government has identified over 40 tourist spots and East Khasi Hills district, in which Sohra or Cherapunji, the wettest place on earth is located, draws a large number of both national and international tourists.
