Melbourne Airport passenger performance April 2017

Melbourne airportThe combination of school holidays, Easter and ANZAC Day have pushed Melbourne Airport’s April passenger traffic to new heights.

Over the month of April the airport recorded 847,828 international passengers, – an average of 28,260 people per day.

That figure translates to growth of 15.6 per cent on April 2016, a rise of more than 100,000 passengers compared to the same time last year. Combining the April performance with that from March 2017, the two-month period saw international passenger traffic grow at an average rate of 9.2 per cent.

Domestic travel also increased by 3.7 per cent compared to April 2016, with more than 2 million people jet-setting Australia-wide through Melbourne Airport.  The combined domestic growth for March and April was 2.3 per cent, averaged over the period.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lyell Strambi said a combination of factors had driven April’s numbers the strong growth seen over the month, including the launch of Virgin Australia’s Melbourne to Los Angeles service.

“For many Australians, a late Easter prompted extended plans to coincide with the ANZAC Day public holiday, and we have seen the impact of that in both international and domestic passenger traffic for the month,” Mr Strambi said.

“One of the key growth highlights for April was the addition of Virgin’s non-stop service between Melbourne to Los Angeles on a Boeing 777, operating five flights per week, equating to 176,000 seats per annum.

“Additionally, we’re seeing the continued performance of many of the new carriers we welcomed to Melbourne in 2016, particularly in the number of options Victorian travellers now have heading into Asia.

“Our financial year-to-date (YTD) as of April 2017 has been outstanding, with international passengers rising by 8.7 per cent, and domestic by 2 per cent. This is driven by a number of new routes and services and the strength of Melbourne as a destination. Our expansion is strong, and we are pleased with the overall financial YTD growth at 3.7 per cent.”
