Madrid has been permitting dog owners to carry their pet dogs with them on the metro railway of the city ever since 6th July 2016. However, that is permitted only on certain conditions. Firstly, the dog should be carries on a lead within 50 centimeters. Next, they should be muzzled. And finally, owners must carry them on the very last carriage of the train.

The authorities would also allow dogs to utilize the stairs and lift of the metro railway station, though they would not be granted access to the escalator for safety reasons.

Also, the owners should microchip their dogs that would enable them to access the metro stations. The owners should also bear in mind that the metro authorities would not permit pets during rush hours of the day. For instance, the time between 7.30 and 9.30 in the morning, 14.00 to 16.00 in the afternoon as well as 18.00 to 20.00 in the evening.

The only days that are exceptions to these restrictions are public holidays, weekends and during July and August.

Other European cities also permit dogs to travel in metros including Berlin, Barcelona, Brussels, Lisbon and London. The dogs are allowed to travel without any charges in Madrid and all these cities. However, till this time only the dogs meant for assisting the blind has been permitted to travel in metro railway networks.

The restrictions have been implemented simply because there exists several people who are not comfortable in the presence of dogs. However, things are gradually changing for the better in Spain. For, nowadays people would come across many beaches, restaurants and shops that are amiable towards dogs.

Animal rights groups have warmly welcomed this decision of the president of the regional government in Madrid, Cristina Cifuentes to aloe pets on the metro. She introduced the scheme by enjoying a metro ride with members of the rescue centre of EI Refugio in Callao and Sol stations accompanied by dogs.
