Miami International Airport presents You Are Here, a mixed media sculptural installation that recreates the constellations of the night sky in physical form based on their historical depictions. Multi-disciplinary artist Ken Nintzel, whose work will be on exhibit during the 2015 Miami Art Week, has created a life-sized stellarium studded with starlight and suspended overhead. The installation is on view in MIA’s South Terminal J Gallery, Level Four Mezzanine.

“Ken Nintzel is a magical story teller offering us a fresh translation of the night sky. His transformation of the night sky into three-dimensional forms allows us to interact with the figures in a more direct and playful way, and encourages us to see the constellations anew,” said Yolanda Sanchez, Ph.D., Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Director at MIA. “We feel extremely fortunate to provide this unique and imaginative experience to our passengers.”

Upon studying the distinctive features of celestial atlases, Nintzel discovered there are two ways constellations are depicted: the internal view, as seen from the earth looking up into the sky; and the external view, as seen from above looking down towards the earth. Seeing both these front and back views only strengthened his desire to transform the constellations into three dimensions, completing a metamorphosis of sorts, from points of light in the sky to basic shapes to illustrated figures to physical form.

The animal constellation figures have been created through a kind of craft-taxidermy, using flocking for fur and sequins for scales, among other materials. The human constellations have been cobbled together from tailor and dress forms, wig heads, boot trees and mannequin parts, to represent generic lay figures that the viewer can project onto, placing themselves in the center of this fanciful universe.

“You Are Here was inspired by my first look at a celestial atlas and its detailed illustrations of the constellations in corporeal form – a menagerie of wild and domesticated animals, reptiles, insects, creatures of the sea, birds in flight, symbolic objects, heroines, heroes and mythological beasts all posed in a celestial tableau,” said Nintzel. “The more I looked at these illustrations, the more I wanted to be among these stellar constellations, surrounded by their physical presence.”

Born in 1968 and raised in New Jersey, Ken Nintzel is a multidisciplinary artist who creates work in a variety of media including theater, installation, performance, sculpture, exhibition, photography and video. In 2013, You Are Here premiered at Next Wave Art as part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. Images of You Are Here have appeared as part of Curate NYC 2013 (Top 150) at Rush Arts Gallery, New York City and in The Cosmos, presented by Art and Science Collaborations’ 15th Annual International Art Science Exhibition at the New York Hall of Science in 2013-14.

In 1987, Nintzel moved to New York City to attend New York University. He received his BFA in 1991 and has lived in the East Village ever since.

The You Are Here sculptural installation continues the primary mission of the Aviation Department’s Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Division to humanize and enrich the airport environment through the commission of contemporary artwork and the presentation of exhibitions in various media that communicate culture, environment and art resources of an international scope.
