Minister says tourism has enough scope for gainful employment

globeAccording to Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Tourism, the tourism industry has immense scope for gainful employment.

On July 19, while giving the keynote address at a Staff Awards Ceremony at the Bahia Principe Jamaica Resort in Discovery Bay, St. Ann, he mentioned that the accomodation subsector gives employment to 89,000 people directly and 250,000 indirectly in Jamaica
He stated, “This shows that one in every four persons employed in Jamaica is actively involved in the hospitality subsector.”

He also stressed on the fact that tourism is the biggest industry all over the world, giving employment to 960 million people and a contribution of US$1.3 trillion to the economies, as almost 1.2 billion tourists travel every year.

The Minister said it is vital that Jamaica maintains itself as a first-choice destination, so that it can get its share of the tourism benefits.

He talked about the Caribbean Tourism Organistion report according to which the Caribbean had its sixth He cited a recent report by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) according to which the Caribbean in 2015 experienced its sixth uninterrupted year of growth in 2015, with a seven percent rise in influx of 28.7 million tourists

The report, also stated that the overall spending had an increase by 4.2 percent to $30 billion, and intra-Caribbean recorded its best performance

Mr. Bartlett added, “Traffic from the Caribbean market accounted for six per cent of total arrivals into the region, with 1.7 million visits among the various states, an increase of 11.4 per cent over the previous year.”

He said that 50% of the arrivals came from the US, 4.5% percent from Canada, while there 5.2 million visits from Europe and 2.1 million visitors from South America

The Minister said that ‘Brand Caribbean’ goes on to enthral the tourists and Jamaica, with all its scenic beauty will attract travellers even more than before.
