Bulgaria needs to make tourism a national cause because of its importance in national economy. This was substantiated by the country’s Minister of Tourism Stela Baltova. To quote Baltova, “Tourism is the sector that has the greatest impact on all other sectors in Bulgaria and has the potential to give the highest growth in gross domestic product.” She was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 34th edition of the international tourist fair Holiday & SPA Expo. Bulgarian Caretaker Prime Minister Ognyan Gerdjikov, who also attended the ceremony, said that the year 2016 went very well for Bulgarian tourism.
In 2016, over 8 million foreign tourists visited the country and revenues from international tourism exceeded 6 billion BGN (3.2 billion US dollars). This revenue earning was primarily due to the beautiful surroundings of Bulgaria and better use of natural resources.
