For the tourism industry, members of Congress speak in support of imports, considering 77.5 million international visitors to the United States, bringing $246 billion in spending. The United States enjoys a trade excess in the global travel industry and a healthy economic output from domestic tourism.
U.S. senators recognized this impact in creating the Travel and Tourism Caucus. Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt serves as one of the chairs of this group. The caucus promotes common-sense policies and increases awareness about the importance of job creation in the travel and tourism industry.
This particular industry gives rise to $2.1 trillion in economic output, produces15 million American jobs and generates $147 billion in tax revenues locally, in all states and for the federal government. According to statistics released in December, Missouri had 41.7 million visitors in the 2016, posting an economic impact of $16.5 billion. The number of Missourians directly employed by tourism businesses is around 300,000.
