From April 17, 2017 – June 15, 2017, a series of mixed media artworks by artist Richelle Gribble are on display at John Wayne Airport (JWA) as part of JWA’s Community Focus Space Program. These paintings, drawings and prints may be viewed on the Departure (upper) Level near security screening areas in Terminals A, B and C, and on the Arrival (lower) Level adjacent to Baggage Carousels 1 and 4.
“Richelle Gribble’s passion for art, science and the natural environment is evident through her work,” said Airport Director Barry A. Rondinella. “The public is fortunate to enjoy Orange County ecosystems illustrated by a talented and accomplished artist.”
Gribble explores life at every level of living systems to examine and reveal intricate and substantive interdependence. By visually revealing structural patterns and characteristics between cross-disciplinary networks, the distinctions between social, biological and technological networks blur into one integrated system, the connected Earth.
As a child, Gribble was raised alternating between two very different family homes; a quaint beach house on Balboa Island and a cabin in Idyllwild located in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. Her examination of nature and its various ecosystems is what inspired her to paint, draw and sculpt local landscapes and wildlife. Orange County provides an abundance of visual inspiration, as scenes from surrounding wetlands, tide pools, sea caves, rolling hills and mountains appear in both obvious and subtle ways. These organic scenes are depicted at micro and macro timescales and decontextualized into surreal worlds unto themselves.
Ms. Gribble earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts from the Roski School of Art and Design with dual minors in Social Entrepreneurship and Marketing at the University of Southern California in 2013. Richelle was the winner of the 2016 Grand Prize Award for solo exhibition and gallery representation at JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY with inclusion in Art Market San Francisco, Texas Contemporary and Miami Project.
