Based on its rich nomadic culture and heritage, the Mongolian government wishes to attract more tourists and restructure its current tourism sector. By 2030, a sustainable tourism development plan has been charted out by the government to make the country a hub of nomadic tourism.
This plan was proposed at the International Silk Road Conference on Nomadic Tourism and Sustainable Cities held at Ulan Bator. Mongolia has good potential for attracting foreign tourists due to its nomadic tourism and heritage.
Lack of proper infrastructure and high costs of travel to Mongolia have previously hampered development of tourism here along with sluggish commodity prices and political clashes.
All these have given rise to economic crisis and so economic diversification in the form of tourism development is a profitable solution.
Around 400 000 tourists visit Mongolia every year and profit from the tourism sector accounts for 3% of the country’s GDP.
This number can go up if tourism develops in Mongolia. The Mongolian government plans to ensure comfortable stay for tourists to attract them to the country and build good toilets in rural areas.
