More than 1600 flights cancelled, storms hit power lines in US

stormThousands are left without power in the US Midwest due to slow moving storms which further led to the cancellation of more than 1600 flights.

 
The near-record snowfall generating slow storms causing low temperatures in the Midwest have moved towards the east. It has left thousands of airline travellers stranded and others without power.

 
Around 310,000 homes and business were without power due to the deadly ice storm mostly in the southeast of Michigan. The snowfall reached upto 18 inches in some areas.

 

The utility DTE Energy mentioned that large areas of Detroit were powerless and customer will not have it back till Sunday night.

 
Detriot and Wayne County saw more than 1,000 power lines falling due to the weight of ice on power lines coupled with high winds.

 
The upper Great Lakes, with Green Bay, Wisconsin faced the worst of snow, as of Sunday afternoon these regions saw its second-largest snowstorm of 23.2 inches (60 cm).
According to the  National Weather Service  the twin cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota  for the month of April recorded a snowfall of 21.8 inches (55 cm) which was surpassed on Saturday.

 

 

Over the Carolinas Tornado watches were in effect however no tornadoes were reported by early Sunday afternoon according to Brian Hurley, meteorologist, National Weather Service.

 

From the Gulf coast to the Midwest the storms stretched and moved into Northeast and New  England.

 

In Oklahoma City and Kansas City on Monday low temperatures for the date were expected.

 

On Friday the weather system resulted in 17 reports of tornadoes in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Texas.

 
Till now   four people were injured and 160 buildings damaged in a possible tornado in northwest Arkansas. Two traffic deaths in western were blamed for traffic deaths.
Around 1,689 flights were cancelled into or out of US airports which included 134 flights in or out of the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport.
