Pioneer of the golf tourism industry in Morocco, the travel agency ‘Morocco Golf Services’ won an award in the category of service quality during the ITB China. This prize rewards the dedication and efforts made by ‘Morocco Golf Services’ to promote Morocco as a destination amongst the Chinese golf clientele. Directed by Farid Bennis, the MGS agency was in the running in the category ‘Services quality’ along some fifty other international companies. The ITB China fair also recompensed other international businesses in diverse categories including ‘marketing’, ‘product adaption’, ‘media’, and ‘start-up’.
The Moroccan tour operator MGS is specialized, since its foundation 3 years ago, in the high-end golf sector. Thanks to its partner in China, MGS achieves a significant growth of 20% in the country. This is because China now has nearly 700,000 licensed golfers, and more than 3 million amateurs of the little white ball. The development potential of this niche sector is enormous, with a forecast of 20 million golfers by 2020!
More generally, the Chinese market represents a real opportunity for Morocco. More than 137 million Chinese tourists have traveled around the world in 2016 and spent more than 220 billion US Dollars.
By focusing on this growing market, ‘Morocco Golf Services’ aims to work towards achieving the Moroccan tourism vision which targets to attract 300 000 tourist golfers by 2020. This target has the potential to be achieved now more than ever, as the recent repeal of the requirement to obtain a visa for Chinese tourists is now a major asset to attract more visitors.
It should be pointed out that the ITB is considered the most important tourism fair in the world. This year it was held for the 1sttime in Shanghai, China from the 10th to May 12th. For the past 51 years ITB was organized annually in Berlin, Germany. The 1st Chinese edition welcomed more than 10,000 professionals and benefited from the support of the European Community that brought together the largest number of exhibitors. The show also saw the participation of other countries such as Argentina, Peru, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, and Egypt.
