SICILY: Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, which has been erupting from time to time during the last couple of weeks, erupted again on Monday night, showering volcanic ash on towns dotting the mountain’s slopes. The volcano has been wreaking damage to its surrounding areas with each eruption.
Media reports said volcanic ashes fell on nearby towns of Bronte, Maniace and Maletto.
According to local authorities, this is Etna’s 19th eruption of 2013 which stopped overnight on Monday around midnight.
This latest eruption didn’t force any evacuations, but authorities reported that nearby Catania airport was closed for about an hour on Monday night, with seven flights diverted to Palermo.
Etna erupts occasionally, with its last major eruption in 1992.
