Three parastatals under the management of Ministry of Tourism may be eliminated very soon if proposals put forwards by Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala are accepted. Mr Balala and his Treasury counterpart Henry Rotich have presented a National Tourism Blueprint 2030 via cabinet memorandum which asks for reorganizing the tourism sector. At present, the ministry has eight parastatals, which the blueprint wants to reduce to six
They include the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Kenya Utalii College, Tourism Research Institute, Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), Tourism Fund (TF), Tourism Finance Corporation (TFC) and Tourism Regulatory Authority. In the proposal, Balala is interested for a new parastatal which would be named as Baraza Kenya to assume the management of KICC and the yet-to-constructed Nairobi International Convention Centre (NICC) at the Bomas of Kenya.
Besides, the CS is equally interested Kenya Utalii College to merged with Tourism Research Institute and named Utalii Kenya. He advises that KTB should be updated in accordance with the Presidential Task Force on Parastatal Reforms as it transitions to Promotion Kenya. The report suggests that the financing role of TFC will be given to a proposed centralized development financial institution under the control of Treasury while the investment promotion role will be transferred to the Kenya Investment Authority whatsoever.
