Mount Taranaki in New Zealand has been named by Lonely Planet as the second-best region in the world to visit in 2017. This is the best ever ranking for any destination in NZ in the travel guide company’s annual ‘Best in Travel’ publication.
Mount Taranaki’s Pouakai Crossing one-day trek and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth were pointed out by Lonely Planet as must-visit experiences. Stacey Hitchcock, regional spokeswoman and New Plymouth councilor said that this recognition would help the world to discover Taranaki in a better way. Those living outside Taranaki might see this as rating as a surprise, but for those who lives or lived here, it is absolutely justified.
