The Malta Tourism Authority recently held an award ceremony for 120 students who took part in a one week job shadowing experience as part of the CHOICE programme. The shadowing experience is organised annually in collaboration with the Directorate for Educational Services, who facilitates identifying the students who expressly request to have their job shadowing experience in the tourism industry.
This year the students were placed at 21 different companies consisting mainly of hotels and restaurants. The aim of the programme is that during the week students have the opportunity to learn about the various careers available and also get to know a bit more about operations in hotels and restaurants.
In his opening speech MTA CEO, Mr Paul Bugeja, mentioned that in an industry based on human resources, it was important to educate youths about the vast array of careers available and to encourage them to see these careers as a future choice.
This is in fact the aim of the CHOICE programme which through various initiatives aims to expose students to careers in the tourism industry. Younger students are taken on hotel visits and have talks in schools. In Gozo students follow job trails taking them to different tourism companies such as hotels, dive schools and visitor attractions.
MTA Chairman Gavin Gulia emphasised that it is important that the industry and education move closer together in a bid to ensure that the industry is supplied with the best employees in the future.
