On Tuesday, Tourism CS Najib Balala was nominated chair of the UN Word Tourism Organisation Commission for Africa in Chengdu, China. Balala will occupy this position for two years til 2019 if President Uhuru Kenyatta succeeds the October 17 presidential election.
In the meanwhile, Kenya has presented its candidature for the position during the 59th meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Africa organized on April 18th till 21st in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The Democratic Republic of Congo wanted the vice chair position for the African commission.
UNWTO is the United Nations agency accountable for endorsing dependable and sustainable universal tourism as a key driver for financial success. The UNWTO has other five regional commissions based in America, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Middle East and South Asia.
Every commission selects a chair and vice chairman for two years, beginning from one session to the next session of the assembly. On November 24, 2015, Balala had returned to the tourism sector from the Ministry of Mining.
