On Friday 17th June, at the conference of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Washington, NASA administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr. announced NASA’s plan to launch an experimental electric-powered plane X-57.
The experimental plane will be energy efficient and will be powered only by electricity. This technical curiosity based project by NASA can start a new era for the aviation industry. If the experiment becomes successful, the technology might become commercially available for small airplanes in near future. But, the technology cannot be used for cross-country jetliners.
The cruising speed of the aircraft can hit up to 175 miles per hour. The body of the aircraft will be smaller than existing aircrafts. Currently, the aircrafts run on gasoline powered motors, which will be replaced by electric powered ones in the new model.
NASA expects “Maxwell”, the new plane, to take off within a year. The proposed aircraft will be able to reduce 40% of manufacturing cost and the motors of the flight will be lot quieter than the available ones. The flight will be able to stay aloft for one hour.
The electric-powered aircraft can change aviation history by cutting the cost of regional air-travel in near future.
