The National Aquarium will release two rehabilitated juvenile green sea turtles at Assateague Island National Seashore along with 10 rehabbed Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles from the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and National Marine Life Center animal rescue programs. The release coincides with World Sea Turtle Day and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Sea Turtle Week.
The Aquarium’s two turtles came to its Animal Care Center in November 2015. “Hardhead” arrived with a low body temperature, broken ribs and a tear in his lungs. “Beachcomber” suffered a rare blood infection and kidney problems. Thanks to the National Aquarium Animal Science and Welfare team, both are now healthy enough to return to their national habitat.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program. Since 1991, the team has successfully rescued, treated and returned more than 160 animals to their natural habitats, primarily along the Maryland coastline.
Attendees also have the option to purchase tickets that include a BBQ Buffet featuring Angus beef burgers, all-natural beef hot dogs, grilled portobello mushrooms, and more! Beer and wine will be available for purchase.
