National Restaurant AssociationThe National Restaurant Association today issued the following statement praising Congressmen Jared Polis (D-CO) and Tom Marino (R-PA) on the introduction of the “Demand Letter Transparency Act,” bipartisan legislation aimed at targeting frivolous demand letter claims made by patent trolls:

“Patent trolls have placed a restrictive and unnecessary burden on restaurants and small businesses looking to build towards the future. This continued assault on innovation is draining billions of dollars from our economy and inhibiting job creation. Determining the legitimacy of patent trolls’ claims for businesses, particularly small businesses, places a strain on growth.  Demand letter transparency is critical to comprehensive patent reform as Main Street businesses continues to tackle illegitimate claims made by patent trolls. We have appreciated working with Congressmen Polis and Marino on this bipartisan effort to highlight the need for increased transparency and will continue to work with them on this issue to ensure expedient passage of reforms. The ‘Demand Letter Transparency Act’ will help millions of restaurateurs nationwide fight these frivolous claims, and clear the pathway for enhancing their customer experience.”

Scott DeFife, Executive Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs, National Restaurant Association.

The National Restaurant Association sent a letter to House Judiciary and Energy & Commerce leadership last week expressing the importance of demand letter transparency provisions in any final patent reform package.
