Nevada’s Burning Man festival faces vandalism at campsite

Published on : Tuesday, September 6, 2016

Burning ManThe authorities of one of the elite camp sites of the Burning Man festival of Nevada have been forced to denounce hooligans for raiding the camp site, stealing possessions, cutting power and gluing the trailer doors. The organisers have also called the sheriff’s office at Pershing County to investigate the night-time raid that targeted the ‘White Ocean’ camp during the all-night-long ‘White Party’.

The organisers of the camp have later posted about the vandalism in the social media. Their post on Facebook says, “Guys, I think what happened last night should be known on social media … A band of hooligans raided our camp, stole from us, pulled and sliced all of our electrical lines leaving us with no refrigeration and wasting our food and glued our trailer doors shut, vandalised most of our camping infrastructure, dumped 200 gallons of potable water flooding our camp.”

Some of the camp-goers have expressed sympathy towards the camp authorities. The Burning Man festival, consisting of almost 65,000 ravers, has been experiencing a transformation in recent years, as the anarcho-hippie ritual is turning into a pricey summer camp inside the Nevada desert.

The camp White Ocean has been co-founded by Timur Sardarov and Oliver Ripley, is one of the pricey camp sites.

According to some festival regulars, the vandalism is just a ‘prank’ on the campers of the White Ocean camp, funded by the tech entrepreneurs. Apparently, they have been “taking burning man back from the parasite class, back from the EDM tourists, taking burning man back for the people”.

The official page of White Ocean has posted in Facebook in response to the criticisms. The post says, “This year has been quite the challenge for our camp. We have felt like we’ve been sabotaged from every angle, but last night’s chain of events, while we were all out enjoying our beautiful home, was an absolute and definitive confirmation that some feel we are not deserving of Burning Man. We actually had someone from the organisation tell us that in paraphrase ‘it makes sense that you have been sabotaged as you are a closed camp and not welcoming’.”

It is very certain that the growing conflict between the elite camps and the regular camps is not going to bring any good news for music enthusiasts in future.
