The survey compared all U.S. destinations based on the minimum price travelers will have to spend to stay overnight in their cheapest available double room. The prices indicated reflect the average guests can anticipate paying during the upcoming month of August. It bears noting that only hotels or inns located in the destination’s center or situated near the beach were considered. The survey also took into consideration only those accommodations with an overall rating of at least 2 stars and with a positive average client evaluation.

At an average nightly rate of $246 for its least expensive double room, Cape May, NJ ranks fifth most expensive overall this August. The costliest summer destination is Saratoga Springs in upstate New York. There, overnight guests will have to spend an average of $332 per night for the most affordable double room.

Completing the Top 3 podium are Nantucket, Massachusetts, a small island located 30 miles south of Cape Cod, and Montauk, New York, the easternmost point of Long Island. At average nightly rates of $329 and $326, respectively, these two destinations come in second and third on the survey.
