Rebecca Latham, Tourism Cabinet Secretary of New Mexico and Gov. Susana Martinez at a recent news conference on Wednesday morning at the Anderson Abruzzo International Balloon Museum explained that in 2016, more than 34.4 million trips took place in New Mexico crushing the record set in the years 2015 which shows approximately 33.4 million.
To quote Martinez, ‘a record number of people are visiting New Mexico and that means more money being spent in our communities — large and small. It is so exciting that more people than ever before are getting to experience what we already know: New Mexico is the best place in the world to enjoy natural beauty, vibrant culture and, of course, our incredible food.’
Since 2010, largely, trips to New Mexico have increased 15.4 percent with 2016 positioning as the largest single-year increase in visitation from the time of the introduction of “New Mexico True” as the state’s tourism marketing brand in 2012.
In terms of increase in job opportunities, the tourism industry carries on to be a leader with more than 2,600 leisure and hospitality jobs added last year — a 2.8 percent growth over the previous year and an 8.6 percent increase since 2010.
“Certainly a lot of hard work has been done,” Martinez mentioned. “The numbers speak for themselves.”
The press conference took place at the museum, located south of Balloon Fiesta Park. Here on every October over 800,000 people assemble to witness the balloons lift off and study about the history of the sport.
“I don’t mind our friends from Texas and elsewhere leaving their money behind,” Martinez joked.
