On Foot Holidays, one of Europe’s leading specialists in self-guided walks, has introduced a new Short Breaks program, which condenses the highlights of most of its 26 inn-to-inn walks into just a few days. Australians who are short on time can opt for shorter, four-night versions of the operator’s week-long hikes to Austria, Germany, France, Italy and other scenic destinations across Europe. Many of the routes have multiple options, meaning travellers can chose the variation which best suits their itinerary.
One of the routes which Australians can now take as a ‘Short Break’ is a journey through the mountains and valleys on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean. The full hike is an eight-night itinerary, but the four-night option will enable walkers to still take in much of the island’s stunning landscape. Travellers will begin in Palma, Mallorca’s capital, where they can explore its labyrinthine streets, palace courtyards, art museums and elaborate cathedral, before heading for the hills. As they walk through the Mallorcan countryside, walkers will pass impressive limestone mountains, historic estate houses and picturesque villages, and at one stage be treated to stunning 360-degree views from high mountain tops.
The four-night version of the inn-to-inn walk costs from £615 ($A1265 depending on exchange rates), per person, twin-share, and includes accommodation, all breakfasts and all luggage transfers, meaning travellers simply carry a day pack. The route is graded medium-hard, with three to nine hours spent walking each day.
Based in the UK and specialising in the ‘art of slow travel’, On Foot Holidays offers walkers around the world 26 self-guided tours across unspoilt areas of Europe for independent travellers who prefer intimate encounters with destinations. Walkers can select their own departure dates and all routes are designed by locals and tested by staff from On Foot Holidays.
