New Zealand to impose new travel rules from October 1

Published on : Thursday, September 26, 2019

Those who are planning to visit New Zealand should know that new travel rules are being formulated in the country, starting October 1, 2019.

As per the new travel rules, the visitors would be required to request the (NZeTA) in order to enter the country. The authorities concerned are also keeping an eye on people with criminal convictions, and are also tightening the national security. This is the reason behind the major changes being faced at the country’s borders. The authorities have started the procedure for identifying those who had the previous record of being sentenced to prison for 12 months or longer. If you have planned a trip for New Zealand, brace yourself for facing questions regarding your criminal convictions.

New Zealand receives almost 1.5 million travellers from its 60-visa-waiver countries and all the travellers will now require permission from the NZeTA. Only after getting the permission, one will be able to board a New Zealand bound plane or cruise ship. You will need to pay $9 or $12 to obtain NZeTA permission. The rule is also applicable for those, who are transiting through the country.

The citizens of New Zealand and Australia need not take any permission from the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority.

One can apply for NZeTA at or via the Immigration New Zealand mobile app. You need to pay NZ$ 12 per person if you apply online. However, you will be charged NZ$9 when using the app. An additional fee of NZ$35 per person will be charged at the same time and it will be the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy.

The revenue generated through NZeTA is supposed to expand the country’s tourism infrastructure and will also help to protect the natural environment. Improved border security and processing time for travellers will be the projected benefits of the NZeTA scheme.
