New Zealand: International tourists push up guest-night accommodation numbers in Oct 2016

new-zealands-top-foreign-exchange-earnerThe guest-night numbers in commercial accommodation, particularly for motels and hotels in October, in New Zealand is on the rise, thanks to increase in international tourists.

 

Figures from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment showed visitors were spending more in nearly every region across the country over the current southern summer, Tourism Minister Paula Bennett said in a statement Friday.

 

“It’s fantastic to see the regions really benefiting from strong tourism growth. This spending brings a real boost to local economies, benefiting businesses with increased trade and creating jobs,” Bennett said.

 

Guest nights for October 2016 were 6 percent higher than that in October 2015, said Statistics New Zealand.

 

International guest nights were up 17 percent, while domestic guest nights were down 0.6 percent.

 

“Although domestic guest nights fell slightly, most other guest-night series are at record highs for an October month,” business indicators manager Melissa McKenzie said in a statement.
