The economy of Nigeria is going through a rough patch. This has become all the more dismal due to excessive dependence on crude oil. While remedial actions have been taken, the federal government needs to work urgently towards diversifying the nation’s economic condition for creating multiple channels of earnings.
The Nigerian government is considering various options and propositions like agriculture, solid minerals, and culture and tourism development. The government has not done enough in these sectors over the years to improve investment in these sectors. The culture and tourism sectors has been largely underdeveloped due to lack of investments and structured development. On the contrary, it has great potential to build the nation’s economy and foreign exchange earnings. Nigeria, presently, does not rank among the first ten most tourism-ready economies in Africa. Nigeria needs to revamp its tourism policies and administrative infrastructure for driving development process through the sector and for generating growth, creating jobs and spinning mega bucks in the nation. The acting Director General of NTDC, Mrs Mariel Rae-Omoh needs to come up with new paradigms for making Nigeria a preferred tourist destination.
