Karim Rabo, the FTAN president, said the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on this Sunday that the statistics are quite low in comparison to other African countries which normally attracts huge international tourists every year.
He however pointed out poor attitude of the Nigerian tour operators and travel agencies as one of the key reasons for Nigeria to lag behind.
He further stated that Nigerian tour operators and travel agencies are more inclined making Nigerian tourists travel abroad rather than focusing on ways to lure international tourists to Nigeria.
To quote Karim Rabo, “Nigerian tour operators and travel agents promote more of outbound tourism than inbound which is not encouraging. We need to get it right by promoting more of domestic tourism asset/potential to the outside world than promoting outbound tourism.”
Mr. Rabo also said that there was a shortage of information about tourism consumptions and market patterns.
To quote him, “Both the federal and state government have no data that show the impact of tourism receipts on Nigeria economy.”
He said that FTAN would collaborate with different multinational organizations along with the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics to develop structures that would be collating tourists’ data at various leading Nigerian tourist destinations.
Mr. Rabo said that these would facilitate the government to understand the impacts and offerings of tourism sector to the Nigerian economy.
