Icelanders have already complained about the annoying tourist behaviours, and now a group of Americans has taken it to a new nadir. Nine men travelling in camper vans were arrested in the East Fjords region this week who were accused of stealing a lamb and slaughtering it to eat.
The men – who were Afghan, resident in the US – were spotted by residents chasing animals in a field. A witness told the police that he didn’t want to chase the tourist group alone as there were nine of them. But Bjarki Svavarsson, the above mentioned witness approached the tourist gang in a group of four, including the farmer whose lamb had been taken, and accused them of stealing. However, the tourists said that they were saving the lamb from drowning after it had jumped into the sea! Svavarsson was sure that was just an excuse and could see the black bin bag in the back of the car which had the lamb with its throat cut.
The men were taken to the police station in nearby Fáskrúðsfjörður, where they admitted stealing and killing the lamb. They were released after paying the farmer for the animal, plus a fine of 120,000 krona (£906).
While some travel guides said that, the fined amount was not enough and should have been thrown out of the country. Others said that the whole scenario is not much clear to them as Icelandic law allows people to eat food from government land.
The lamb, of course, was private property – but the anything-goes attitude of tourists in Iceland could have blurred the boundaries.
