Fremantle has topped Flight Centre’s list of trending destinations for Australians holidaying at home.
Data released by the travel agency reveals Freo saw a 126 per cent surge in bookings in 2015 compared to 2014 – the biggest growth of any destination for domestic travellers.
“With dining, markets and beaches, the port city’s natural charms are evident,” a Flight Centre statement said, while it attributed the jump in popularity to a boom in the cruise industry.
“Locals can jump aboard a great value cruise to Bali, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong, while Aussies around the country can still come out ahead with a cheap Asia cruise holiday from Fremantle even with the added cost of a flight to Perth.”
This year is shaping up as a big one for Fremantle, which landed seventh spot on Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2016: Top 10 Cities selections – the only Australian location to make the list.
Flight Centre’s top 10 trending travel destinations for Australian holiday-makers are:
2. Hayman Island
7. Wagga Wagga
8. Port Macquarie
