Noosa Triathlon has been announced as the world’s largest mass participation triathlon. Event organisers Chief Executive Officer Geoff Meyer was pleased to make the announcement driving the strategy that Queensland is the home of the sport and base for many international athletes.
Established in 1983 and hosted in Noosa Heads, Queensland, last year’s Olympic distance (1.5km swim, 40km ride and 10km run) triathlon, saw over 8,000 participants cross the finish line, enough to knock the London triathlon off top spot.
Noosa is now followed by the London, Hamburg and Chicago Triathlons respectively.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said the event’s status as the largest Olympic distance triathlon in the world last year reinforced Queensland’s standing as Asia-Pacific’s home of triathlon.
Professional triathletes from various backgrounds come together each year to compete for one of the sports most coveted titles.
In 2016 the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival will run from Wednesday 26 October – Sunday 30 October.
