The line between Birmingham and Manchester reopened at 15.36 today after passengers journeys were disrupted this morning by a broken down machine on the line.A Network Rail spokesman said: “We’re really sorry for all the train customers delayed and inconvenienced this morning.
“Our big ballast-cleaning train, which we had been using overnight to keep the foundations of the railway functioning correctly, broke down at Stoke early this morning.”Our engineers have worked on this all day and we are glad to get services back to normal.”
Virgin Trains, London Midland and CrossCountry customers had been routed via Crewe and Madeley rather than Stoke and Macclesfield after Network Rail’s huge ballast-cleaning train failed. The ballast, the foundations of the railway, was being cleaned to keep it in good condition and improves drainage which is imperative in the current weather conditions.
