Traveling into Orlando International Airport on the north entrance road from Semoran Boulevard or the Beachline Expressway, you can’t help but notice all of the construction taking place on the driver’s side of your vehicle. What is that? It is the answer to many drivers’ requests for a convenient, clean and comfortable place to park and wait for their party’s flights to arrive, the future North Cell Phone Lot.
“We have heard our customers concerns and we think this new state-of-the-art facility will meet and or exceed all of their demands,” says Frank Kruppenbacher, Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “This new facility should benefit our customers by reducing or eliminating their circling time while waiting for passengers to arrive.”
“Along with the obvious benefits for the public, the project also addresses airport capacity issues,” says Phil Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “By reducing the number of cars on the curbs and roadways the airport will be better equipped to handle the increasing passenger growth in the future.”
Once completed, in time for the 2015 year-end holiday travel season, the North Cell Phone Lot project will accommodate up to 200 vehicles, will have permanently installed restroom facilities, electrical access and Wi-Fi capabilities. The location will also provide drivers and their pets with the ability to relax with a view overlooking a newly landscaped retention pond with access to a dog park / relief area. Once called by their party, drivers will then have easy access from the North Cell Phone Lot to the “A” terminal arrival and departure levels.
As part of the overall project, bus and taxi drivers in the taxi hold and bus hold lot to the south of the main terminal building will also have a new permanent restroom facility built along with new parking lot re-striping, a new Flight Information Display Screen, to better track flight arrivals and an all new outdoor seating area.
These projects are all part of the airport’s $1.1 billion capital improvement program which includes new terminal ticket lobbies, baggage system enhancements and a new south airport automated people mover complex.
