To drive the tourism in North Korea, Mount Kumgang would be designated as the UNESCO Heritage Site. Mount Kumgang is a tourist region, established in 2002 to control South Korean tourist traffic near Diamond Mountain. This tourist region has the wetlands and the mountain attracts most of the Asian and Chinese tourists.
The application to enlist Mount Kumgang Tourist Region as UNESCO Heritage Site is in final position. The Tourism department said that it will help to drive more tourism in North Korea and also hoping to take a fund from United Nations to preserve this biosphere reserve as a Eco-tourism project.
North Korea would also obtain the fund to maintain the local and pristine environment by limiting the carbon emission in the area due to the heavy settlements in this region.
The Government of North Korea is making some efforts to expand the tourism development plans to make it more attractive to the tourism world. In recent years North Korea has made a push to boost the luxury and comfortable, but sustainable tourism to the country after past ventures alongside the South Korean government were dissolved.
Mount Kumgang Tourist Region which is culturally and historically significant to both nations- North Korea and South Korea- has been the center controversy in the past following the murder of a South Korean tourist in 2008.
This is the latest move in a series of attempts by the Kim Jong-un regime to legitimise tourism to the area from nations other than South Korea. Last year the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea invited the British YouTuber Louis Cole to the nation to promote the beaches and the surf culture for adventure tourism.
All of this comes amidst the mountain sanctions on the North Korea for its nuclear development program, bringing into question the plan’s legitimacy. North Korea is in desperate financial straits with sanctions radically plummeting the trade and its ability to send workers overseas.
The tourism here is one of the many strategies, the regime has attempted in the past to increase revenues and legitimise itself to the world. If the application will be successful the designation would see Mount Kumgang Tourist Region in joining such holiday favourites as Mount Olympus in Greece and even the Isle of Man.
